U.S. Army Sergeant Cory Luttrel Clark Sr., 25, of Plant City, Florida, died on August 28, 2007, in Jaji, Afghanistan, while serving with the 585th Engineer Company during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Their Story
Cory Luttrel Clark Sr. was a 25-year-old soldier from Plant City, Florida. He served on active duty in the U.S. Army as a sergeant assigned to the 585th Engineer Company, 864th Engineer Battalion, based out of Fort Lewis, Washington.
On August 28, 2007, Sergeant Clark was killed by hostile action in the Jaji district of Afghanistan's Paktiya province. According to the Department of Defense, his unit was conducting route clearance operations when it came under enemy fire. He was one of two soldiers killed in the engagement.
Clark's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The mission initially focused on dismantling al-Qaeda and removing the Taliban from power, but evolved into a protracted counterinsurgency and nation-building effort. By 2007, U.S. and NATO forces were engaged in intense fighting across the country's eastern and southern regions.
The Department of Defense announced Clark's death on August 30, 2007. He was survived by his wife and young son, Cory Jr., as well as his parents and siblings in Florida. His body was returned to the United States for burial.
Sergeant Clark is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Veterans Memorial Park in Tampa, Florida. His name is also inscribed on Panel 26E, Line 12 of the Afghanistan Campaign Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia.
