Captain Bruce Kevin Clark, 43, of Spencerport, New York, was a U.S. Army officer serving with the William Beaumont Army Medical Center. He was killed in action on May 1, 2012, in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Bruce Kevin Clark was a 43-year-old captain in the U.S. Army Medical Command (MEDCOM). He was from Spencerport, New York, and was assigned to Company A, Troop Command, at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On May 1, 2012, Captain Clark was killed in Tarin Kowt, the capital of Uruzgan province in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained from small arms fire while on patrol. He was serving as a member of a Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) at the time of the incident.

Clark's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with a focus on counterinsurgency and training Afghan security forces. Uruzgan province was a known area of Taliban activity and a frequent site of combat operations.

The Army announced Clark's death in a press release on May 3, 2012. He was posthumously promoted from the rank of captain to major. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal.

Major Clark is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in his hometown of Spencerport, New York. His name is also inscribed on Panel 27W, Line 105 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia.
