Lance Cpl. Dominic John Ciaramitaro, 19, of South Lyon, Michigan, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on April 23, 2011.
Their Story
Dominic John Ciaramitaro was a 19-year-old from South Lyon, Michigan. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned as a lance corporal to the 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 1, of the 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
On April 23, 2011, Ciaramitaro was killed while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained from hostile enemy action.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, Helmand province was a focal point for U.S. Marine Corps operations against Taliban insurgents, with frequent engagements in districts like Sangin and Marjah.
Ciaramitaro's body was returned to Michigan. A funeral service was held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in South Lyon. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
He was remembered by his family and community as a dedicated Marine. His name is inscribed on the South Lyon Veterans Memorial and is listed on Panel 32W, Row 12 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Royal Oak, Michigan.
