Staff Sgt. Rusty Hunter Christian, 24, was a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier from Greenville, Tennessee. He was killed by enemy fire on January 28, 2010, during a patrol in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Staff Sgt. Rusty Hunter Christian was a 24-year-old Green Beret from Greenville, Tennessee. He was assigned to Company C, 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Lewis, Washington.
On January 28, 2010, Christian was conducting a dismounted patrol in the Tarin Kowt district of Afghanistan's Uruzgan province. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire during the operation.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The operation involved counterinsurgency missions and training of Afghan security forces.
The Department of Defense announced his death on January 29, 2010. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal, according to military records.
Christian was buried at Mountain Home National Cemetery in his home state of Tennessee. He is remembered on memorials for fallen Special Forces soldiers.
