Staff Sergeant Robert Joseph Chiomento II was a 34-year-old soldier from Fort Dix, New Jersey. He served with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, based at Fort Polk, Louisiana, as part of the U.S. Army's contribution to Operation Enduring Freedom.
On July 17, 2006, Chiomento was killed during combat operations in the village of Khwaya Ahmad, located in Afghanistan's Paktika province. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was engaged in a firefight with enemy forces. The Department of Defense confirmed his death was the result of hostile action.
Chiomento's death occurred during the fifth year of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001.
