Lance Cpl. Cody Steven Childers, 19, of Chesapeake, Virginia, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on August 20, 2010.

Their Story

Cody Steven Childers was a 19-year-old from Chesapeake, Virginia. He served as a Lance Corporal with the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, part of the I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

On August 20, 2010, Childers was killed in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died while conducting combat operations. The official casualty report listed his death as hostile.

Childers was deployed as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan. In the summer of 2010, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in a major offensive in Helmand, a Taliban stronghold and center of opium production, aiming to secure population centers ahead of planned political transitions.

His death was reported by the Department of Defense on August 23, 2010. He was one of at least 1,242 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan that year, which was the deadliest of the conflict for American forces.

Childers is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond. His name is also inscribed on Panel 7R, Line 110 of the Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall in Rosslyn, Virginia.
