Staff Sergeant Kyu Hyuk Chay, 34, of Astoria, New York, was a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier. He was killed in Tarin Khowt, Afghanistan, on October 28, 2006.
Their Story
Staff Sergeant Kyu Hyuk Chay was a 34-year-old soldier from Astoria, New York. He served as a Special Forces engineer sergeant with Company C, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
On October 28, 2006, Chay was killed during combat operations in Tarin Khowt, the capital of Afghanistan's Uruzgan province. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was engaged by enemy small-arms fire. He was one of two U.S. soldiers killed in the engagement.
Chay's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2006, U.S. and NATO forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations across southern Afghanistan, including Uruzgan province.
Following his death, Chay was posthumously promoted from Sergeant First Class to Staff Sergeant. He was survived by his wife and a young daughter. A memorial service was held at Fort Bragg.
Chay was remembered by his commanders as a dedicated and professional soldier. His name is inscribed on the Special Forces Memorial Wall at Fort Bragg and on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
