Their Story
Robert Keith Charlton was a 22-year-old soldier from Malden, Missouri. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company C, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Drum, New York.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Charlton was wounded by an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol in the Arghandab District of Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, on October 25, 2009. He was evacuated for treatment to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, where he died from his injuries two days later, on October 27.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The Arghandab District was a known insurgent stronghold, and U.S. and allied forces conducted frequent counterinsurgency operations there in 2009.
Charlton's death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in several news publications. He was posthumously promoted to Specialist and awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals.
He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and by the 10th Mountain Division from Fort Drum. His name appears on the 'Fallen Heroes' monument in his hometown of Malden, Missouri.
