Their Story
Sergeant First Class Kristopher David Chapleau was a 33-year-old soldier from LaGrange, Kentucky. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His military service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.
On June 30, 2010, Chapleau was killed by enemy small arms fire during combat operations at Forward Operating Base Blessing in the Pech District of Kunar Province. The base, a remote outpost in eastern Afghanistan, was a frequent target of insurgent attacks.
Chapleau's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In mid-2010, U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in a major troop surge aimed at countering a resilient Taliban insurgency, particularly in the country's volatile eastern provinces.
Following his death, Chapleau's body was returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. A memorial service was held at Fort Campbell, and he was buried with full military honors.
Chapleau is remembered by his unit and community. His name is inscribed on the Kentucky Veterans Memorial and is listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Campbell.
