Captain Jeremy Alan Chandler, 30, of Richmond Hill, Georgia, was a U.S. Army Reserve officer killed in action on August 11, 2005, in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Jeremy Alan Chandler was a 30-year-old Army captain from Richmond Hill, Georgia. He served as a member of the U.S. Army Reserve, assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was deployed to Afghanistan as part of the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force.

On August 11, 2005, Captain Chandler was killed during combat operations in Tarin Kowt, the capital of Afghanistan's Uruzgan province. According to the Department of Defense, his unit was conducting a patrol when it came under enemy small-arms fire. Chandler was reportedly struck and died from his wounds.

His death occurred during a period of Operation Enduring Freedom marked by a resurgence of Taliban activity. By 2005, insurgent tactics increasingly included ambushes and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), particularly in southern provinces like Uruzgan. U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in counter-insurgency and stabilization missions.

Captain Chandler's death was announced by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Georgia National Cemetery and on Panel 9E, Line 124 of the Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall in Albany, Georgia.

He is remembered by his unit and community as a dedicated soldier. A memorial scholarship fund was reportedly established in his name at his alma mater, Georgia Southern University, where he was a member of the Army ROTC program.
