Their Story

Christian Jacob Chandler was a 20-year-old soldier from Trenton, Texas. He served as an infantryman with Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, New York.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Chandler died on April 28, 2014, at Forward Operating Base Shank in Logar Province, Afghanistan. The official casualty report listed the cause as a result of hostile enemy action. No further specifics regarding the incident were publicly released by military authorities.

Chandler's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2014, the mission was in a period of transition, with U.S. and NATO forces shifting from direct combat to a train, advise, and assist role ahead of a planned withdrawal.

Following his death, Chandler's body was returned to the United States. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Trenton, Texas, where he was remembered by family and community members. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.

Chandler is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Texas Capitol and on the 10th Mountain Division memorial at Fort Drum. His name is also inscribed on Panel 21W, Line 113 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
