U.S. Army Sergeant David James Chambers, 25, of Hampton, Virginia, was killed in a hostile incident in Kandahar, Afghanistan, on January 16, 2013.

Their Story

David James Chambers was a sergeant in the United States Army. He served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, based out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. According to unit records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On January 16, 2013, Sergeant Chambers was killed in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of a direct fire engagement with enemy forces. He was 25 years old.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By early 2013, the conflict was in a phase focused on transitioning security responsibilities to Afghan forces, though combat operations, particularly in southern provinces like Kandahar, continued.

Following his death, Chambers was posthumously promoted from specialist to sergeant. He was survived by his wife and other family members. A memorial service was held at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Sergeant Chambers was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His name is inscribed on Panel 3W, Line 123 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia.
