Captain James Edward Chaffin III, 27, of West Columbia, South Carolina, was a U.S. Army field artillery officer. He was killed in action on April 1, 2014, in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Their Story

James Edward Chaffin III was a 27-year-old Army captain from West Columbia, South Carolina. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 3rd Battalion, 319th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Captain Chaffin died on April 1, 2014, in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. He was killed by small arms fire while on patrol during a combat operation. The incident was reported as part of a larger engagement between coalition forces and insurgents in the region.

Chaffin's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2014, the mission had shifted from major combat operations to a focus on training Afghan security forces and conducting counterinsurgency missions, particularly in southern provinces like Kandahar.

Following his death, the Department of Defense issued a formal casualty announcement. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to South Carolina, where a funeral service was held.

Captain Chaffin is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and at the Fort Bragg memorial. His name is included on the South Carolina Fallen Heroes Memorial in Columbia, which honors the state's service members killed in the Global War on Terror.
