Lance Corporal Irvin Martin Ceniceros, 21, of Clarksville, Arkansas, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on October 14, 2010.
Their Story
Irvin Martin Ceniceros was born in Clarksville, Arkansas, and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served as a Lance Corporal with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, based at Camp Pendleton, California. His unit deployed to Afghanistan as part of Regimental Combat Team 2.
On October 14, 2010, Ceniceros was killed in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained while conducting combat operations. The Marine Corps stated he was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, launched in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The mission initially focused on dismantling al-Qaeda and removing the Taliban from power. By 2010, the conflict was marked by a significant troop surge and intense fighting in Taliban strongholds like Helmand.
The Department of Defense announced Ceniceros's death on October 16, 2010. His body was returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart medal.
Lance Corporal Ceniceros is remembered on memorials in Arkansas and at Camp Pendleton. His name is inscribed on Panel 3W, Row 102 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Marine Corps Museum.
