Cassada, Jessie Adam
Lance Cpl. Jessie Adam Cassada, 19, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, was a U.S. Marine killed in hostile action in Now Zad, Afghanistan, on January 6, 2009.
Their Story
Jessie Adam Cassada was a 19-year-old from Hendersonville, North Carolina. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served as a Lance Corporal with Company L, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
On January 6, 2009, Cassada was killed during combat operations in the Now Zad district of Afghanistan's Helmand province. The Marine Corps stated he died from wounds sustained while supporting combat operations. The area was a known Taliban stronghold and a focal point for intense fighting at the time.
Cassada's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led international military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In early 2009, U.S. forces were engaged in a significant troop surge, with Helmand province being a central battleground against insurgent forces.
Following his death, Cassada's body was returned to Hendersonville. A memorial service was held at Hendersonville High School, where he had attended. The local newspaper, the Times-News, reported on the community's mourning and the procession that accompanied his remains.
Cassada is memorialized on the Fallen Heroes Memorial in Hendersonville and on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans History Museum of the Carolinas. His name is also inscribed on Panel 35W, Line 65 of the Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall in Rossford, Ohio.
