Joseph Davis Caskey was a 24-year-old sergeant from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, serving with the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, based at Camp Pendleton, California. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Regimental Combat Team 7 under the I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward.
On June 26, 2010, Sgt. Caskey was killed by hostile action in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died while supporting combat operations. No further specifics regarding the incident were released in initial reports.
