U.S. Army First Lieutenant Donald Clayton Carwile, 29, of Oxford, Mississippi, was killed in a hostile incident on August 15, 2008, in Wardack, Afghanistan.

Their Story

First Lieutenant Donald Clayton Carwile was a 29-year-old officer from Oxford, Mississippi. He served with Company D, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his military service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa prior to his assignment in Afghanistan.

On August 15, 2008, Carwile was killed in Wardack, a village in the rugged Logar Province southeast of Kabul. The Department of Defense stated his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device during a patrol. Another soldier, Private First Class Paul E. Conlon Jr., 21, was killed in the same blast.

The incident occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2008, the conflict was marked by a significant increase in insurgent activity and the use of IEDs, which became the leading cause of casualties for coalition forces.

Carwile's death was reported by multiple news outlets, including The Clarion-Ledger in Mississippi. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His remains were returned to the United States for burial.

Carwile is remembered by his unit and community. A memorial service was held at Fort Campbell, and his name is inscribed on the 101st Airborne Division Memorial Wall at the base. He was survived by his wife and two daughters.
