Lance Cpl. Ross Steven Carver, 21, of Rocky Point, North Carolina, was a U.S. Marine killed in a hostile incident at Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan, on September 3, 2010.

Their Story

Ross Steven Carver was a 21-year-old from Rocky Point, North Carolina. He served as a Lance Corporal with the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, part of Regimental Combat Team 7, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

On September 3, 2010, Carver died at Camp Dwyer, a forward operating base in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of a hostile incident. According to contemporaneous reporting, he was killed by an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol.

Carver's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2009, a surge of U.S. forces, primarily Marines, was deployed to Helmand Province to clear Taliban strongholds and stabilize population centers, leading to intense combat in the region through 2010 and 2011.

His death was announced by the Department of Defense. Local news reports from North Carolina noted his passing and that he was survived by his parents and siblings. A funeral service was held in his hometown.

Carver was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He is remembered on memorials in North Carolina and at Camp Lejeune. His name is inscribed on Panel 10R, Line 110 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
