Their Story

Nathan Brock Carse was from the village of Harrod in Allen County, Ohio. He was 32 years old and served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army, assigned to the 595th Sapper Company, 2nd Engineer Battalion, 176th Engineer Brigade, based at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. Sapper units are specialized combat engineers.

On February 8, 2011, Carse was killed in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death resulted from hostile action. He was conducting operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom at the time of his death.

Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused in southern provinces like Kandahar, a traditional Taliban stronghold.

Carse's body was returned to the United States. A funeral service was held at Harrod United Church of Christ, and he was buried with military honors in Preston Cemetery, near Alger, Ohio. The Lima News reported that he was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings.

Corporal Carse was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Ohio Statehouse and on the Allen County Veterans Memorial in Lima, Ohio.
