U.S. Army Specialist Jacob Charles Carroll, 20, of Clemmons, North Carolina, was killed in action on November 13, 2010, in Zhari District, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Jacob Charles Carroll was a 20-year-old soldier from Clemmons, North Carolina. He served as a Specialist in the United States Army, assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

On November 13, 2010, Carroll was killed while conducting operations in Zhari District, Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile action, reportedly from an improvised explosive device (IED) attack. He was one of two soldiers from his unit killed in the same incident.

Carroll's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, Zhari District was a significant area of operations for coalition forces, particularly in the Arghandab River Valley, where Taliban forces maintained a strong presence and IEDs were a persistent threat.

Following his death, Carroll's body was returned to North Carolina. A memorial service was held at West Forsyth High School, which he had attended. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other military honors.

He is remembered on memorials in his home state and by his unit. His name is inscribed on the Forsyth County Veterans Memorial in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
