U.S. Army Specialist Joseph Thierry Caron, 21, of Tacoma, Washington, was killed in action on April 11, 2010, in Char Bagh, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Joseph Thierry Caron was a 21-year-old soldier from Tacoma, Washington. He served as a Specialist with Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team of the 82nd Airborne Division. Before deploying to Afghanistan, his service reportedly included assignments in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.

On April 11, 2010, Caron was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in the village of Char Bagh, located in the volatile Zhari district of Kandahar province. The patrol was part of a larger operation to clear the area of insurgent forces. Another soldier from his unit was reportedly wounded in the same engagement.

The incident occurred during a major coalition offensive, Operation Moshtarak, which began in February 2010 to secure population centers in Helmand and Kandahar provinces. The Zhari district, where Char Bagh is situated, was a known stronghold for insurgent fighters. Caron's death came during a period of intense fighting as U.S. and allied forces attempted to extend government control.

Caron's body was returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. His funeral was held in his home state of Washington.

His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Tacoma Veterans Memorial Park. He is remembered by family, friends, and fellow paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division.
