Their Story
Anthony Mark Carbullido was a 25-year-old sailor from the village of Agat on the U.S. territory of Guam. He served as a Petty Officer 2nd Class (PO2) with the U.S. Navy's Hospital Corps, having trained at the Naval Hospital Corps School in Great Lakes, Illinois. His role as a hospital corpsman typically involved providing medical care to fellow service members.
Carbullido died on August 8, 2008, in the village of Sangatesh, located in Afghanistan's volatile Helmand Province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of hostile fire. Specific details of the engagement were not widely released, but he was reportedly serving with a Marine unit at the time of the incident.
His death occurred during a period of intensified combat in Operation Enduring Freedom. By 2008, Taliban insurgents had significantly increased their use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and direct attacks, particularly in southern Afghanistan. U.S. and coalition casualty figures rose steadily that year during a push to secure rural districts.
Carbullido's body was returned to Guam. A memorial service was held for him at the Agat Senior Center, and he was interred at the Guam Veterans Cemetery. The Navy posthumously awarded him the Purple Heart and Combat Action Ribbon.
He is remembered on the Fallen Heroes Memorial website and is listed on the Guam Veterans Memorial Wall. His name is also inscribed on the Navy Hospital Corpsman Memorial at the Naval School of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland.
