Their Story

Mario Delosangeles Carazo was a lieutenant colonel in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 39 (MAG-39), 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, based at Camp Pendleton, California. The 41-year-old officer from Springfield, Ohio, had served in multiple deployments, including to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On July 22, 2010, Carazo was killed in Trek Nawa, a district in Afghanistan's Helmand province. According to the Marine Corps, his death was the result of hostile action. Specific details of the incident were not widely released, but the area was a known center of insurgent activity at the time.

Carazo's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In the summer of 2010, U.S. and allied forces were heavily engaged in Helmand province, a Taliban stronghold, as part of a major troop surge aimed at securing population centers.

The Marine Corps announced his death in a press release. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star with combat 'V' for valor and the Purple Heart. His funeral was held in Ohio.

Lt. Col. Carazo is listed on the Fallen Heroes of Ohio memorial and is remembered by his unit and community. His service record reflects a career dedicated to multiple theaters of the post-9/11 conflicts.
