Staff Sergeant Jose Manuel Caraballo Pietri, 32, of Yauco, Puerto Rico, was a U.S. Army artilleryman. He was killed in a hostile incident on April 10, 2011, in Ghormach district, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Jose Manuel Caraballo Pietri was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He served with Battery C, 1st Battalion, 84th Field Artillery Regiment, part of the 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team based in Baumholder, Germany. The brigade deployed to Afghanistan in early 2011 as part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

On April 10, 2011, Caraballo Pietri was killed in Ghormach district, located in Afghanistan's northwestern Faryab province. The Department of Defense stated his death resulted from a hostile incident involving enemy small arms fire. He was 32 years old.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, the war was in its tenth year, with U.S. and ISAF forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations against Taliban and other insurgent groups, particularly in the country's volatile south and east.

Following his death, Caraballo Pietri was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. He was survived by his wife and children. A memorial service was held at his unit's home base in Germany.

Staff Sergeant Caraballo Pietri was buried with military honors in Puerto Rico. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on several online veterans' memorial sites.
