Their Story
Mark Russell Cannon was a 31-year-old Petty Officer Third Class from Lubbock, Texas, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was assigned to a detachment supporting the 3rd Marine Division, and his service reportedly included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On October 2, 2007, Cannon died in the Korengal Valley of eastern Afghanistan's Kunar Province. The Department of Defense announced his death was the result of hostile action. The Korengal was a focal point of intense combat, and on that same day, another American service member was killed in a separate incident in the same valley.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001. By 2007, the conflict was marked by a resurgence of Taliban and insurgent activity, particularly in remote eastern provinces like Kunar. The Korengal Valley, nicknamed the 'Valley of Death,' was the site of frequent, close-quarters engagements between U.S. forces and insurgents.
The Department of Defense formally notified Cannon's next of kin following his death. His name is listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Lubbock Area Veterans War Memorial in Texas, and he is recorded on the Pentagon's official casualty list for the conflict.
Cannon's death is documented in military archives and local memorials in his hometown. He is one of over 2,400 U.S. service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
