U.S. Army Specialist Gerardo Campos, 23, of Miami, Florida, died on June 2, 2012, in Kandahar, Afghanistan, from hostile enemy action.

Their Story

Gerardo Campos was a 23-year-old soldier from Miami, Florida. He served as a Specialist with Company B, 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, part of the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.

On June 2, 2012, Specialist Campos was killed by enemy small-arms fire in the Dand district of Kandahar province, according to a U.S. Department of Defense news release. He was on patrol when his unit came under attack.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2012, Kandahar province remained a major center of insurgent activity and a focus for international forces.

The Department of Defense officially announced Campos's death on June 4, 2012. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried at South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth, Florida.

Campos was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He is remembered by his unit and family as a dedicated soldier.
