U.S. Army Specialist Joshua Ross Campbell, 22, of Bennett, Colorado, was killed in a hostile incident on January 29, 2011, northeast of Forward Operating Base Budwan, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Joshua Ross Campbell was a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to the 546th Transportation Company, 129th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He was a native of Bennett, Colorado, and was 22 years old at the time of his deployment to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On January 29, 2011, Campbell was killed in a hostile incident approximately 10 kilometers northeast of Forward Operating Base Budwan in Afghanistan's Paktika province. According to military reports, his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device while on a supply route mission.

Campbell's death occurred during the final years of Operation Enduring Freedom, a conflict that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2011, the U.S. had implemented a troop surge to counter a resilient Taliban insurgency, with many casualties resulting from IED attacks on convoys and patrols.

The Department of Defense announced his death on January 31, 2011. His body was returned to Colorado, where he was buried with military honors. His family and community in Bennett held memorial services, and he was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.

Campbell is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Colorado Freedom Memorial in Aurora and on online veterans' remembrance pages. His unit continued its logistics mission in Afghanistan until the U.S. combat mission concluded in 2014.
