Their Story

Staff Sergeant Damion Garland Campbell was a 23-year-old soldier from Baltimore, Maryland. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, part of Combined Joint Task Force-76, which was based at Camp Ederle in Italy. His unit had been deployed to various locations, including Afghanistan, as part of U.S. military operations.

On August 26, 2005, Campbell was killed in Khayr Kot, a district in Afghanistan's Paktika province. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his death was the result of a hostile incident. The specific circumstances of the attack were not detailed in the initial release, but it occurred during a period of intense insurgent activity in the region.

Campbell's death came during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2005, the conflict had entered a phase marked by a resurgence of Taliban forces and a sharp increase in the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and direct attacks against coalition troops. The eastern provinces, including Paktika, were frequent sites of such engagements.

The Department of Defense announced Campbell's death on August 29, 2005. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. His death was reported by several news outlets, including The Baltimore Sun, which noted he was the second soldier from Maryland to die in Afghanistan that week.

Campbell is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Maryland and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on Panel 9W, Line 111 of the Afghanistan Campaign Memorial Wall at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
