Technical Sergeant Anthony Charles Campbell Jr. was a 35-year-old Air Force Reservist from Florence, Kentucky. He was assigned to the 932d Civil Engineer Squadron, based at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. Civil engineering squadrons are responsible for construction, repair, and base infrastructure support.
Campbell died on December 15, 2009, in the Now Zad district of Helmand province, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed by an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol. He was one of two U.S. service members killed in the incident.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2009, the conflict was marked by a significant troop surge, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused on Taliban strongholds in southern provinces like Helmand.
The Air Force posthumously promoted Campbell to the rank of Technical Sergeant. He was survived by his wife and children. A memorial service was held at Scott Air Force Base, and he is buried at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North in Williamstown.
