Their Story
Jason Dean Calo was a 23-year-old sergeant from Lexington, Kentucky, serving on active duty with the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, of the I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
On August 22, 2010, Sergeant Calo was killed by hostile fire while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense confirmed his death the following day. He was one of at least four U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan that day, according to casualty reports.
Calo died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2010, the conflict was in its ninth year, with a significant U.S. and NATO troop surge focused on insurgent strongholds in the country's south, including Helmand province.
His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors in Lexington Cemetery in Kentucky. The Marine Corps posthumously awarded him the Purple Heart. Local news reported on his funeral, noting his service and the community's mourning.
