Their Story
Sean Timothy Callahan was a 23-year-old sergeant from Warrenton, Virginia, serving with the 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His unit was part of Regimental Combat Team 1, deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On April 23, 2011, Sgt. Callahan was killed by hostile fire in Helmand province, a volatile southern region of Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died while conducting combat operations.
Callahan's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in Helmand, a Taliban stronghold and center of opium production. The U.S.-led coalition and Afghan forces conducted major offensives there to secure population centers and disrupt insurgent networks.
According to a 2011 report from the *Fauquier Times*, his death was met with grief in his hometown. He was remembered by a former teacher as a respectful student who had chosen to serve.
Sgt. Callahan was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on Panel 30E, Line 105 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum and on a memorial in Warrenton.
