Their Story

Norman Lewis Cain III was a 22-year-old soldier from Freeport, Illinois. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army with Company D, 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry Regiment, based in Woodstock, Illinois. The unit was part of the Illinois Army National Guard.

On March 15, 2009, Cain was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in the Kot district of Afghanistan's Nangarhar province. The patrol was part of a security operation in the region.

Cain's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2009, the conflict was marked by a significant increase in U.S. troop levels and insurgent activity, particularly in eastern provinces like Nangarhar.

Following his death, Cain was posthumously promoted from Private First Class to Specialist. He was survived by his parents and siblings. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Freeport.

He was remembered by his unit as a dedicated soldier. His name is inscribed on the Illinois Fallen Heroes Memorial.
