Cpl. Justin James Cain, 22, of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on October 13, 2010.
Their Story
Justin James Cain was a 22-year-old from Manitowoc, Wisconsin, who enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served as a Corporal with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, part of Regimental Combat Team 2, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based out of Camp Pendleton, California.
On October 13, 2010, Cain was killed during combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained while conducting a dismounted patrol. The area was a center of Taliban activity and intense fighting during the period.
Cain?s death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2010, the conflict was marked by a significant troop surge and major offensives, particularly in Helmand and Kandahar provinces, aimed at disrupting Taliban strongholds.
His body was returned to Wisconsin, where he was buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc. Local news reported that hundreds of community members lined the procession route to pay their respects. The Marine Corps posthumously awarded him the Purple Heart.
Cain is remembered on the ?Darkhorse? memorial for the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, a unit that sustained heavy casualties during its 2010-2011 deployment. His name is also inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Manitowoc County Veterans Memorial.
