Michael Christopher Cable was a 26-year-old U.S. Army sergeant from Philpot, Kentucky. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
According to the Department of Defense, Sgt. Cable died on March 27, 2013, in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, from wounds sustained during a direct fire engagement with enemy forces. The incident occurred in Nangarhar Province, a region of persistent insurgent activity.
Cable's death came during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2013, the conflict was in a phase focused on training Afghan forces and conducting counterinsurgency operations, with U.S. troops regularly exposed to combat risks.
