Their Story
Staff Sergeant Christopher Francis Cabacoy was a 30-year-old soldier from Virginia Beach, Virginia. He served with Troop B, 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Drum, New York. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was on his second deployment to Afghanistan.
Cabacoy died on July 5, 2010, in Kandahar province, southern Afghanistan. The Pentagon reported he was killed by an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol. He was one of four U.S. service members killed in separate hostile incidents across Afghanistan that day.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In mid-2010, U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in a major offensive in Kandahar, a Taliban stronghold, aimed at securing population centers.
Cabacoy's body was returned to the United States, and he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart, awarded posthumously.
He is remembered on memorial pages for fallen service members from Virginia and by his unit. A street at Fort Drum was reportedly named in his honor.
