Private First Class Jordan Matthew Byrd, 19, of Grantsville, Utah, was a U.S. Army infantryman killed in Yahya Kheyl, Afghanistan, on October 13, 2010.
Their Story
Jordan Matthew Byrd was a 19-year-old soldier from Grantsville, Utah. He enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned as an infantryman to Company A, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
On October 13, 2010, Pfc. Byrd was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in Yahya Kheyl, a village in the volatile Paktiya province of eastern Afghanistan. The patrol was part of a larger security operation in the region.
Byrd's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, the conflict was marked by a significant U.S. troop surge and intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the country's eastern provinces along the border with Pakistan.
His body was returned to Utah, where he was buried with military honors. The Department of Defense officially announced his death on October 15, 2010. Local news reports documented community mourning in his hometown.
Pfc. Byrd was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. He is memorialized on a monument in Grantsville and on the 101st Airborne Division memorial at Fort Campbell.
