Their Story
Keith Thomas Buzinski was a 26-year-old from Daytona Beach, Florida. He served as an active-duty sergeant in Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, part of the 4th Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Polk, Louisiana.
On April 7, 2011, Sergeant Buzinski was killed by indirect fire at Forward Operating Base Shank, a major coalition base in Logar Province, Afghanistan. The base, also known as FOB Shank, was a frequent target of insurgent rocket and mortar attacks. The Pentagon confirmed his death was the result of a hostile incident.
Buzinski's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the 9/11 attacks. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with coalition forces engaged in counter-insurgency operations and training Afghan national security forces.
His death was reported by multiple news outlets, including the Daytona Beach News-Journal, which noted his local ties. He was one of at least 1,500 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan up to that point in the war.
Sergeant Buzinski is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Museum of the Forgotten Warriors in California and on online veterans' memorials. His unit, the 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, continued its deployment in Logar Province following his death.
