Their Story
Justin Lee Buxbaum was a 23-year-old soldier from South Portland, Maine. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company A, 62nd Engineer Combat Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, based out of Fort Hood, Texas.
On May 26, 2008, Buxbaum was killed at Forward Operating Base Kushamond in Afghanistan's Paktika Province. According to the Defense Casualty Analysis System, he died of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire during a firefight.
Buxbaum's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2008, the conflict was in a phase of intense fighting as insurgent forces, including the Taliban, had regrouped and increased attacks, particularly using improvised explosive devices and direct engagements.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in local Maine media. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
Buxbaum is memorialized on the South Portland Veterans Memorial and is listed on the Afghanistan War casualty roster maintained by the Defense Department. His unit, the 62nd Engineer Battalion, continued its mission of route clearance and construction support in Afghanistan.
