U.S. Army Private First Class Brandon Lucas Buttry, 19, of Nebraska City, Nebraska, was killed in action on November 5, 2012, in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Brandon Lucas Buttry was a 19-year-old soldier from Nebraska City, Nebraska. He was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.
On November 5, 2012, Buttry was killed by an improvised explosive device while on patrol in the Kandahar province of southern Afghanistan. He was serving as part of a dismounted infantry patrol when the blast occurred.
His death came during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2012, Kandahar remained a major area of operations for coalition forces, with IEDs being a primary cause of casualties.
Buttry's death was reported by the Department of Defense. His body was returned to Nebraska, where a funeral service was held at the First Christian Church in Nebraska City. He was buried in the Wyuka Cemetery.
He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. In 2013, a memorial stone was dedicated in his honor at the Nebraska City High School football field.
