Sgt. Brandon Cole Bury, 26, of Kingwood, Texas, was a U.S. Marine killed in action on June 6, 2010, in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Brandon Cole Bury was born in Kingwood, Texas, a suburb of Houston. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served as a sergeant with the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, Regimental Combat Team 7, part of the 1st Marine Division based at Camp Pendleton, California.

On June 6, 2010, Sgt. Bury was killed during combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained while supporting combat operations. His unit was engaged in a major offensive, Operation New Dawn, aimed at clearing insurgent strongholds in the area.

Bury's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2010, the conflict's focus had shifted to a counterinsurgency strategy, with a significant troop surge deployed to provinces like Helmand to secure population centers and train Afghan forces.

The Marine Corps announced his death on June 8, 2010. He was survived by his parents and other family members in Texas. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with full military honors.

Sgt. Bury is memorialized on the 'Faces of the Fallen' page of The Washington Post and on the online 'Fallen Heroes' memorial maintained by Military Times. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Marine Corps Museum.
