Their Story
Dennis James Burrow was a 23-year-old Marine from Naples, Florida. He served with Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, part of the 2nd Marine Division based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His unit deployed to Afghanistan as part of Regimental Combat Team 3 under the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade (Forward).
On August 7, 2009, Burrow was killed by hostile action at Camp Bastion, a major British-operated airfield in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense announcement did not specify the exact incident, but his death was recorded as occurring in a combat zone from hostile causes. At the time, his battalion was engaged in operations across Helmand.
Burrow's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. In the summer of 2009, U.S. and allied forces, including the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, were conducting a major troop surge to counter Taliban influence in southern provinces like Helmand.
Following his death, Burrow's body was returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. Local news in Florida reported on his funeral services and the community's response to the loss of a young Marine from the area.
Lance Cpl. Burrow is memorialized on the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines memorial at Camp Lejeune and on online veterans' memorials. His name is included on the roster of U.S. service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
