Their Story

Scott Hamilton Burgess was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army's HHB, 1st Battalion, 84th Field Artillery Regiment, based in Baumholder, Germany. A native of Franklin, Texas, he was 32 years old at the time of his death. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On April 4, 2011, Burgess was killed by enemy small-arms fire in Maymaneh City, the capital of Faryab province in northern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, launched in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with international forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations and training Afghan national security forces.

The Army posthumously awarded Burgess the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. He was survived by his wife and children. His remains were returned to the United States for burial.

Burgess is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Texas Capitol and on online veterans' memorials. His unit, the 1st Battalion, 84th Field Artillery Regiment, was part of the 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team during its 2011 deployment.
