U.S. Army Sergeant Douglas John Bull, 29, of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, died on July 8, 2008, from hostile action at Bagram Airfield's Main Access Control Point in Afghanistan.

Their Story

Sergeant Douglas John Bull was a 29-year-old soldier from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He served with Company A, Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Hood, Texas, as part of the U.S. Army's contribution to Operation Enduring Freedom.

According to the Department of Defense, Bull died on July 8, 2008, at the Main Access Control Point (MACP) of Bagram Airfield (BAF), a major coalition base north of Kabul. The official casualty report listed his death as the result of hostile action. Specific details of the incident, such as whether it involved small arms fire, indirect fire, or another attack, were not detailed in the initial release.

Bull's death occurred during a period of intensified fighting in the Afghanistan war. By mid-2008, Taliban insurgents had regrouped and were conducting frequent attacks on coalition forces and bases, including complex assaults on fortified positions. The conflict, which began in October 2001, was in a phase characterized by a rising U.S. troop presence and escalating violence.

Following his death, Bull was returned to Pennsylvania. A funeral service was held in his hometown of Wilkes-Barre. The Department of Defense publicly announced his death, and his name was added to the official casualty lists maintained by the Pentagon and memorial organizations.

Sergeant Bull is remembered on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Pennsylvania Veterans Memorial and on online memorial walls dedicated to fallen service members. His name is also inscribed on the Afghanistan and Iraq War Memorial in his home county of Luzerne, Pennsylvania.
