Buffalo, Loren Miles
Corporal Loren Miles Buffalo, 20, of Mountain Pine, Arkansas, was a U.S. Army cavalry scout. He died on March 9, 2011, in Kandahar, Afghanistan, during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Their Story
Loren Miles Buffalo grew up in Mountain Pine, Arkansas, a small community in the Ouachita Mountains. He enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned as a cavalry scout to Troop B, 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
On March 9, 2011, Corporal Buffalo was killed in Kandahar province, southern Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.
His death occurred during a period of intense fighting in the Kandahar region, part of a U.S. and NATO troop surge aimed at securing population centers. Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, had begun in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks.
The Department of Defense announced his death on March 11, 2011. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors in his home state of Arkansas. Local news reported on memorial services held in his community.
Corporal Buffalo was posthumously promoted from Specialist to Corporal. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Hot Springs Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Arkansas.
