Buenagua, Ardenjoseph Ayuson

Ardenjoseph Ayuson Buenagua was a 19-year-old from San Jose, California. He served as a Lance Corporal with Delta Company, 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, based at Camp Pendleton, California. The battalion deployed to Afghanistan in support of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission.

On November 24, 2010, the Department of Defense announced that LCPL Buenagua died while conducting combat operations in Helmand province. According to official statements, his death was the result of hostile action. Helmand was a major center of the insurgency and the site of intense fighting during the 2010 U.S. troop surge.

Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001. By 2010, the conflict's focus had shifted to southern provinces like Helmand, where ISAF forces sought to clear insurgent strongholds and establish government control. The 1st Combat Engineer Battalion's role involved route clearance and construction in a high-threat environment.

Following his death, LCPL Buenagua's body was returned to the United States. He was buried with military honors. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Marine Corps Museum and on online memorials dedicated to fallen service members.
