Staff Sgt. Andrew Stephen Bubacz, 23, of Dalzell, South Carolina, was an active-duty U.S. Air Force communications specialist. He was killed in action in Nuristan province, Afghanistan, on November 12, 2010.

Their Story

Andrew Stephen Bubacz grew up in Dalzell, South Carolina. He served on active duty in the United States Air Force as a member of the 97th Communications Squadron, based at Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma.

On November 12, 2010, Bubacz was killed in Nuristan province, eastern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device while on a mounted patrol.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation focused on counter-insurgency and training Afghan security forces.

The Air Force posthumously promoted Bubacz to the rank of staff sergeant. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, South Carolina.

Bubacz is remembered by his unit and community. In 2011, the 97th Communications Squadron dedicated a memorial stone in his honor at Altus Air Force Base.
