Frank Diehl Bryant Jr. was a lieutenant colonel in the United States Air Force, assigned to the 56th Operations Group based at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On April 27, 2011, Bryant was killed in Kabul, Afghanistan. According to U.S. military reports, he was shot by an Afghan military pilot during an argument at the Afghan Air Force headquarters at Kabul International Airport. The incident was investigated as a homicide.
Bryant's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation's objective was to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban regime from power.
The Afghan pilot, identified as Ahmed Gul, was detained by Afghan authorities following the shooting. The U.S. Air Force confirmed Bryant's death and stated he was part of a team training and advising Afghan air force personnel.
Bryant was posthumously promoted from major to lieutenant colonel. He is memorialized on the Air Force Memorial Wall and at the Tennessee Fallen Heroes Memorial in Knoxville.
