Their Story
Scott William Brunkhorst was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. According to military records, he had previously deployed to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.
On March 30, 2010, Brunkhorst was killed by hostile fire in the Arghandab River Valley of Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day. He was reportedly part of operations in a volatile agricultural district northwest of Kandahar city, an area heavily contested by Taliban insurgents.
Brunkhorst's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2010, U.S. and NATO forces were engaged in a major troop surge, with intense fighting focused on Taliban strongholds in southern provinces like Kandahar.
Following his death, Brunkhorst was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. He was survived by his wife and other family members. A memorial service was held at Fort Bragg.
