Lance Cpl. Gavin Roderick Brummund, 22, of Arnold, California, was a U.S. Marine killed on June 10, 2010, at Camp Bastion, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Gavin Roderick Brummund was a 22-year-old from Arnold, a small community in California's Sierra Nevada foothills. He served as a lance corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, part of the 2nd Marine Division based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His unit deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Brummund died on June 10, 2010, at Camp Bastion, a major British-run airbase in Helmand Province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of hostile action. Specific details of the incident were not widely released, but the location indicates he was killed on a large, fortified coalition base.
His death occurred during a period of intense fighting following a major U.S. troop surge in Afghanistan. In 2010, Helmand Province was a focal point for operations against Taliban insurgents. Coalition forces, including Marine units like Brummund's, were engaged in clearing operations and securing population centers.
Brummund's death was reported by the Department of Defense on June 12, 2010. He was one of at least 58 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan that month, making it one of the deadliest of the war for American forces. His remains were returned to the United States.
Lance Cpl. Brummund is remembered on memorials in his hometown and by his battalion. His name is inscribed on the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines memorial at Camp Lejeune and is included on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the California State Capitol.
