Browning, Charles Robert

Charles Robert Browning was a 31-year-old staff sergeant from Tucson, Arizona. He served with the Arizona Army National Guard's Company B, 1st Battalion, 158th Infantry Regiment, a unit headquartered in Phoenix. According to military records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa prior to 2007.

On June 1, 2007, Browning was killed in Mehtar Lam, the capital of Laghman province in eastern Afghanistan. A U.S. military statement confirmed he died from wounds sustained during a hostile incident while on patrol. The Department of Defense release did not provide further specifics on the engagement.

Browning's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By mid-2007, the conflict was marked by a resurgence of insurgent activity, particularly in the country's eastern provinces. U.S. and NATO forces were engaged in counter-insurgency operations and training Afghan national security units.

Following his death, Browning was posthumously promoted from sergeant to staff sergeant. His funeral was held in Tucson. The Arizona National Guard and local officials publicly acknowledged his service and sacrifice.
